I skate about 15 to 20 hours a week and also incorporate a lot of off-ice training. I take ballet and Pilates classes and lift weights with my physical therapist when I’m not on the ice.
In this day and age of computer lifestyle, muscle imbalance is rampant and the cause of most low back and neck pain. One of the most effective exercise programs to undo the negative effects of our postural epidemic and body de-conditioning is Pilates.
Pilates is an exercise system that is focused on balancing the imbalances that long term sitting and computer use creates, building strength without bulk, improving flexibility and agility, and helping to prevent injury. It involves a series of controlled movements that engage both your body and mind to focus on using your body in a fashion that reinforces balance – what we call mindful movement. Pilates utilizes specifically designed exercise apparatus with very specific movements to initiate core muscles with peripheral ones to create the proper muscle co-contractions. The primary focus is on awareness of the spine, proper breathing, core strength and flexibility. The outcome of Pilates training is a balanced body which is strong and supple, flat stomach, balanced legs, and a strong back. At Vivie Therapy, we take you to the next level of power and fitness with the best instructors in the business.
Our physical therapists also work with Pilates to create a postural program to undo the specific log term effects of poor posture. Along with Pilates training, you will receive home exercises and techniques to keep the balance you create in Vivie Therapy. You’re never too old to undo years of sitting the wrong way, staring at your computer and driving for 2 hours to work. Let our practitioners show you how “Living Vivie is Living Pain-Free.”
